Another shot from the Brisbane Gallery Of Modern Art of a display called The Book From The Sky.
This was purchased by the gallery in 1994 and is composed of bound books covering the floor, and reams of paper draped overhead, recalling the daily papers in China which are pasted on boards for all to read.
These reams display around 4,000 characters that were meticulously carved by Xu Bing, and although they look readable, they were all invented by the artist and took 5 years to complete.
The high art of calligraphy, intended to spread knowledge has been subverted.
Interpreted by authorities as an audacious statement, the work critically questions the notion of power and the collapse of political dialogue through the written word.
I hope you got all that, because there will be a test later.
