Lophostemon confertus leaf and bark

Lophostemon confertus (syn. Tristania conferta) is commonly called brushbox, Brisbane box, or vinegar tree. Native to Australia, the tree is commonly planted in Hawai’i for windbreaks. Unlike eucalyptus, brushbox tends to keep its compact crown all the way down to the ground and thus makes an effective windbreak. The hard, heavy wood is used for flooring, pulp chips, for construction, shipbuilding, bridges, railway crossties, and mallets.
